Communities of Readers
Lead researcher: Alex Woodley
The Communities of Readers in an initiative led by the National Library New Zealand. It is working with parties to support reading communities that inspire and support children and young people to read for pleasure. Reading for pleasure is one of the most important indicators for the future success of a child, improving literacy, learning, health and wellbeing and social outcomes. In addition to educational outcomes, it builds empathy and strengthens the ability of those who read to see things from other points of view.
Communities of Readers projects were trialed in Canterbury, with children in care, and 3-7 year olds and their whānau in South Dunedin. Point undertook research in the communities to understand the conditions that could help grow communities of readers, to find out if the projects made a difference to access to books and reading for pleasure, and to look at how the projects might be sustained.
